Part 1 │ 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Drafting Wills 101 - A Primer with Eleanor Wiebe, Q.C.

Like sunshine and fresh air, everyone needs a Will.  But do you know how to draft one?  Award winning lawyer and law teacher, K. Eleanor Wiebe Q.C., has retired from active practice but continues to teach the popular Wills course at the University of Manitoba Faculty of Law and has many years of experience in drafting Wills.  In Drafting Wills 101, Eleanor has created a short course designed for early career lawyers or those who do not regularly draft Wills and want a refresher.

In the course of the morning, Eleanor will review basic practical steps and legal issues involved in drafting a Will for a client.  The program will include the review of legal precedents, highlight common errors and offer solutions to common problems that can arise.  This program is focused on the drafting of Wills and not on Estate or Succession planning.

Eligibility For CPD Hours: This part of the program may be reported for up to 3 hours of eligible CPD activity of which 1.5 hours are EPPM.

Part 2 │ 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM

Estate Administration 101 - Robert (Bob) Fabbri

Sooner or later everyone dies, and the estate has to be administered.  If a client shows up in your office asking for advice about administering an estate with or without a Will from the deceased, do you know what to say and do? Robert (Bob) Fabbri, a respected and experienced lawyer in active private practice, has been advising clients about estate administration for many years.  In Estate Administration 101, Bob has created a short primer aimed at early career lawyers or those who do not regularly handle estates and would like a refresher.

In the course of an afternoon, Bob will walk you through all the steps involved in basic Estate Administration from the first visit with the client through to the fees, the reporting and closing of the estate file.  He will discuss necessary documents, review and share some precedents and offer practical tips for the lawyer advising a client or administering an estate matter.

Eligibility For CPD Hours: This part of the program may be reported for up to 3 hours of eligible CPD activity of which 1.5 hours are EPPM.

Bob and Eleanor will be present at each other’s program and will be available for questions throughout the day. You will leave this program with information and precedents that you can start to use immediately in your practice.
