On April 14, we announced changes to articling requirements. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, June 2020 recruitment of articling students for Winnipeg positions in 2021-22 was postponed. In consultation with firms that intended to participate in the June recruitment and with the Career Development Office at Robson Hall, New Recruitment Guidelines have been created for the recruitment of articling students for Winnipeg positions in 2021-22. As you can see, the recruitment will now take place during the reading week that U of M students have in November 2020. As a reminder, no efforts to recruit an articling student for a Winnipeg position for the 2021-22 period can take place prior to the dates and times set out in the Recruitment Guidelines.
If your firm or workplace had not signed up to participate in the June recruitment, you can sign up to participate in the November recruitment. We hope that setting the recruitment period later in the calendar year will accommodate more workplaces participating in the recruitment of students for 2021-22.
Changes to PREP admission requirements for 2020/21
Given the impact of COVID-19 on both students and the legal profession the decision has been made to change the admission requirements for the Practice Readiness Education Program (PREP) for the 2020/2021 year. Students with a Canadian common law degree or Certificate of Qualification from the Federation of Law Societies of Canada may register and complete PREP without secured articles for the June and December 2020 intakes. This change will provide students with an opportunity to complete their Bar Admission program without delay. As well it allows students to develop the necessary competencies and practice lawyer skills within PREP which they can apply immediately when they begin their articles. This change will also offer greater flexibility for firms regarding start dates for their articling students. For more information please go to the CPLED website.
