In March 2020 Lawyers for Literacy (L4L) event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, although we were pleased to be able to provide West Broadway Youth Outreach (WBYO) with some support through monies associated with the advance L4L fundraising.
West Broadway Youth Outreach Update
In the last several months, West Broadway Youth Outreach has established an endowment fund with the Winnipeg Foundation with the goal of providing annual support to WBYO kids and WBYO volunteers who are pursuing post-secondary education and the first two scholarships were awarded for the upcoming school year. It is the intention of WBYO to apply all funds raised at future Lawyers for Literacy events to the endowment fund.
Executive Director Ken Opaleke and his team have done an amazing job over the first four months of the pandemic to continue their programs online. To facilitate this, they deliver the means to the children’s homes in advance of each program. For example, WBYO delivers arts and crafts materials for the week’s project, or ingredients for the Yum Yum Club so that they all cook together online. They even provided iPhones and plans to many of the kids so that they can continue to participate.
LSM Collecting Gently Used School Supplies
As the kids are returning to school, the WBYO supplies have been depleted and so the Law Society is collecting new or gently used school supplies. If you have any items you wish to donate, we would be pleased to pass them on to WBYO.
While the Law Society offices remain closed to the public, there will be a clearly labeled container for WBYO donations located just outside the Law Society doors where school supplies can be dropped off during regular business hours.
