Practising Fees
Due each year on the first business day after April 1 and covers the member from April 1 of one year to March 31 of the following year. Payment can be made in full or in instalments. See Payment Schedule below.

The Legal Profession Act (19(3)) exempts certain members from paying this fee. A member may also be exempt under Law Society Rules 5-30(3) or (4) for those practicing and insured and residing in another Canadian jurisdiction. Lawyers claiming exemption must complete an exemption application form annually.

Annual Fee Notices
Fees are set annually by the Chief Executive Officer. All practicing lawyers will receive an email 30 days prior to the due date advising of the amount. Personalized invoices are available through the member portal.
Pro-rated Fees
Fees are pro-rated for lawyers entering or resuming practice. Contact the Law Society for an individualized invoice.

Late Payment Penalties & Suspension
Late payments are charged $10 per day until the fee is paid, to a maximum of $300. This is permitted under Law Society Rule 2-87(1). The Chief Executive Officer, in exceptional circumstances, may waive or reduce this penalty. A member who fails to pay the required annual practising or insurance fee plus any penalty within 30 days of the due date is automatically suspended (Rule 2-88).

Refunds
Refunds for previously paid fees are permitted, subject to the following:
- Refunds will be pro-rated on a monthly basis, calculated from the first of the month following receipt of the application to withdraw from practice.
- Refunds will be payable to the party who paid the practising fee, unless the Society is advised otherwise.
- A refund fee of $100 plus GST will be applied to all refunds.
- A refund will not be permitted where the net refund is less than $200.
- Refunds are not permitted if the member has been suspended or disbarred.
