Competence and Membership Departments

About the Role:
The Competence and Membership Departments oversee the admission and credentialling process for those seeking to become lawyers in Manitoba. This newly created role offers an experienced professional the opportunity to support articling students on their path to becoming lawyers while coordinating key events, including the Annual Mass Call to the Bar.

The role is well-suited to someone with strong interpersonal skills for building and fostering stakeholder relationships, who is detail-oriented and experienced in administration, event coordination, and planning. This not an entry level-position. Salary will be commensurate with the experience, skills, and qualifications that the successful candidate brings to the position

About the Law Society of Manitoba:
The Law Society of Manitoba is the independent regulator of approximately 2,300 practicing lawyers that comprise the legal profession in Manitoba. The Law Society’s mandate is to protect the public interest by ensuring that legal services are delivered by a competent, honourable and independent legal profession.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with department leadership to:
    • monitor and report on progress of articling students as they fulfill the credentialing requirements and provide analytics
    • process and track applications for student financial assistance and awards, including tuition subsidy programs
    • arrange Call Ceremonies including booking and liaising with venue, all suppliers and stakeholders
    • ensure communications with stakeholders is timely, informative, appropriate and effective
    • identify potential applicant groups to develop and implement communication strategies and organize outreach events
  • Identify and document policies and processes involved in carrying out tasks
  • Assist and oversee other related administrative tasks as required by the department

Qualifications
Required:

  • Self-starter who can work effectively as a member of a team or independently as required
  • Able to build and foster strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent communicator who can prepare and edit documents in a variety of formats including Word, Excel and PowerPoint with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Able to interpret data and to think critically

Assets:

  •  5+ years experience in an office setting of a larger organization
  • Experience with large event coordination
  • A degree or comparable experience in the following areas:
    • Legal or regulatory fields
    • Post secondary administration
